What defines us?  What makes us who we are?  Perhaps for some it is their spouse.  For others it may be their job.  Maybe it is our friends.  Or as they say, you can judge a man by the quality of his enemies.

What defines me?  Sometimes I think it is my job.  I cannot foresee myself being one of those that retire young.  (Not that it is likely to happen in our current economy).  What would I do with my days if I did not have a job?  Would I have a sense of worth?  At other times, I think it is my spouse without whom I would not have the confidence and the stability to function as I do now.

In the dark corners of my mind, I fear that what may define me would be what I may lose.  I have been watching box sets of Monk (the obsessive, compulsive, detective) and I can understand how he can fall apart so completely after the sudden loss of his wife.  Naturally the show is extreme but sometimes I wonder. . .

Them and Us

Filed under: Musings — jackoatsmon @ 3:26 pm

Everyone seems to have a need to belong at some level.  We feel a need to belong to groups – as a couple, a family, fan clubs, interest groups, nation, etc.  Having become part of a group, the next step seems to be a need to define the ‘us’ by having a rival ‘them’.

Talk of universal brotherhood and love is well and good.  It is a wonderful ideal.  Even taking this into account, there is always a sense of ‘them’.  At the very core, we will tend to look after ‘us’ first and there is always a ‘them’ to guard against.

Then again, perhaps its just me.  🙂

Too many interests, too little time.

In a world where your job demands more and more of your time, technology enables more and more distractions to be thrown at us.  In having too many interests, we sacrifice passion and depth have been sacrificed for breath.  I admire those who can focus on one hobby or interest and excel in that one item.  If provides focus and a chance to turn the expertise in that interest into something more useful or lucrative.  On the other hand, those who have varied interests sample more but may end up as a Jack of All Trades, Master of None.
